Job Advert Summary
One focus area of the HSC research programme is research on the social determinants of HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis. The work strives to address these health problems at their source, namely, at both the social and population levels. It also includes social aspects of delivery models for biomedical interventions to optimise the delivery of interventions.
The HSC research programme is currently implementing the South African National HIV prevalence, Incidence, Behaviour, and Communication Survey (also known as SABSSM VI). The programme had previously advertised HTS Counsellor data collector positions nationwide and is currently targeting individuals from the specific Districts listed above due to the operational needs for the successful implementation of the survey.
Minimum Requirements
Requirements:

Must be an Enrolled, Professional nurse or Phlebotomist with relevant qualifications. If not an Enrolled, Professional nurse or Phlebotomist, please do not apply.

Professional training in nursing or phlebotomy should permit the participant to draw blood without any supervision.

Above-average ability to read, write and speak is essential in English, isiXhosa and other South African languages spoken in the specified locations above.

Familiarity with the use of electronic tablets.

Prior relevant working experience working in the community outside a clinic context will be advantageous.

Willingness to work in a team.

Willingness to travel long distances, within and outside of one’s province when required.

Willingness to visit selected households during weekends and after hours.

Having a valid driver’s license will be an added advantage.

Proven ability to exercise discretion in dealing with confidential or sensitive matters

Preference will be given to Enrolled or Professional nurses/ Phlebotomists who have worked in research (HSRC or elsewhere) in a similar position.

Available for a period of up to 5 months but this will be determined by the availability of maps per province. This is a project-based position for 5 months and not permanent.

Must be currently registered with the South African Nursing Council.

Duties & Responsibilities
Key responsibilities:

Successful candidates will be responsible for the implementation of the survey by collecting data in households using electronic tablets to interview selected participants.

Attend training sessions in full;

Successful candidates will be required to work within a team.

Provide potential participants information about the project.

Collect dried blood spots (DBS) from children, adults, and via heel prick from infants (professional nurse only).

Collect venous blood.

Ensure quality work by following processes, procedures, and steps, outlined in the training manual.

Manage fieldwork expenses by completing reconciliations following HSRC rules and regulations.

Manage assets provided by HSRC.
