ABOUT THIS ROLE

The Experiential Learning Manager will be joining our global Programs Team to curate and facilitate the in-person student programming components of our Take Action Lab (TAL) in Cape Town. You will operate as the main, on-the-ground interface between our global team, our Take Action Lab students, and our in-country partners. Working with a small team in person and a larger remote team, your primary responsibilities will focus on developing an innovative, educative, in-person local orientation, and contextualizing TAL’s curriculum through experiential learning activities. You will also manage Global Citizen Year’s relationships with partners in South Africa and be the point of contact for emergency preparedness and response.

In this exciting phase of the organization’s growth, you’ll be a part of innovating and problem solving alongside your Programs Team peers as we navigate the opportunities and challenges that come with launching this new program, building our Cape Town community, and continuing to learn and iterate from our 10+ years of experience. 

YOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPACT

Lead in-person learning components of the program: enhance students’ experience by developing experiential learning activities in line with Take Action Lab’s curriculum. 

  • Identify learning opportunities in Cape Town that support TAL’s learning outcomes.
  • Lead training, orientations and reflection activities with students.
  • Develop relationships with local leaders/communities that add value to students’ immersion in Cape Town.

Partnership management: as Global Citizen Year’s lean on the ground, proactively develop relationships and maintain close contact and communication with local partners.   

  • Set up weekly touch points with the local team to monitor, support and troubleshoot issues connected to the program’s planning and implementation.
  • Escalate administrative and/or operational issues to the Senior Program Manager that impact our relationship with the local partner or the sustainability of the program.
  • Ensure a smooth delivery of all program components and adequate support to participants. 
  • Proactively cultivate relationships with partners who can help us achieve our program goals in South Africa.
  • Manage TAL’s in-country budget. 

Manage students’ program preparation: develop and maintain systems to support students’ onboarding to the program.

  • Support students’ preparation for their time in South Africa, through information sessions, written documentation, and responses to student and family inquiries.
  • Manage systems to track visas, travel plans, and other important information.
  • Ensure local partners receive timely information to allocate students’ apprenticeships and housing.

Incident Management & Emergency Response: provide students with socio-emotional learning and support, and in coordination with the emergency provider program partner, support students in emergency response. 

  • Provide student emotional support during any hospitalization or other major incidents.
  • Support decision making, response, and reporting for health and safety incidents, as needed.
  • When on emergency duty, be available and remain within cell service at all times.
  • Working with the Global Programs Team, direct communication with students’ families at home during hospitalizations or other emergencies.

The following are required:

  • All routine immunizations and vaccinations, including COVID-19, must be complete and up to date according to WHO guidelines.
  • Legally able to live and work in South Africa full time
  • Familiarity with Cape Town’s social impact sector
  • Spoken and written fluency in English
  • 5 years of experience facilitating outdoor education, experiential learning and/or youth development programs for youth ages 17-21. 
  • Experience managing staff from different backgrounds. 
  • Experience developing and delivering training sessions and thematic seminars for different audiences e.g. youth, community stakeholders, non-profit organizations.
  • Experience cultivating and managing program partnerships.
  • Background in Education (serving youth aged 17-25), Cultural Anthropology, Social Work or International Development.

Bonus points if have/are:

  • Experience with hiring staff 
  • Experience managing health and safety protocols
  • Basic first aid training
  • Bilingual or multilingual familiarity with Afrikaans and Xhosa

POSITION LOGISTICS & MORE INFORMATION

Location: Cape Town, South Africa

Start date: The priority deadline for this application is September 14, 2022; ideal start date is November 1, 2022. 

Compensation: The salary range for this role is 424,600 –  509,600 ZAR. We are proud to provide a total compensation package that puts the person first, and can discuss in more detail once a candidate has applied. Some of our benefits include:
