An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Safety Officer at I&J Fishing, Cape Town Waterfront (CTF) in the Risk and Safety Department. The purpose of this role is ensure Health, Safety and Environmental compliances for the CTF site and its vessel fleet throughout the Management of Safety systems, Policies, Procedures and requirements as stipulated in the OHS Act & Regulations and SAMSA Act.

Job Specification:
Key Performance Areas:
- Maintain the Vessel’s safety management system
- Conduct internal audits for shore base and vessel fleet
- Conduct Quayside safety inspections and walkabouts
- Safety management of external service providers / contractors
- Ensure compliance with Health and Safety policies and procedures for the site
Audits
- Conduct regular Internal Audits for Shorebase and Vessel Fleet
- Document inspections and reporting on findings as stipulated by Management
- Minimum audit findings during external Audits through regular internal audits and corrective actions
- Follow-up on the corrective actions and closing of inspection findings.
- Conduct regular walkabouts
- Document each vessel’s inspection and report on findings.
- Monthly follow-ups on addressing findings and reporting on progress.
- No outstanding findings for more than 6 months.
- Contractor Inductions
- Ensure that all contractor’s safety files are up to date before commencement of work.
- Contractor Compliance to TNPA for Dry Dock work.
- Conduct and document JSA’s for various jobs on the vessels.
- Conduct Permit to work Audits and ensure that the permits are completed correctly and provide training where necessary.
- Induct contractors on I&J’s Safety Standards and Procedures, Policies and OHS Act & Regulations.
- Contractor Safety files are in place and updated timeously.
- Liaise with TNPA management to understand the requirements for Dry Dock Work and ensure Contractor Safety Files are submitted timeously to TNPA.
- Documented JSA’s to ensure contractors are working safely at all times.
- Documented Permit Audits and address non-compliances immediately.
- Support all internal and external Audits
- Assist with quayside safety which entails Marsh Audit preparations
- Assist Vessel Safety Officer when needed.
- Attend department Safety Meetings
- Ensure Good Housekeeping on the quayside.
- Perform Ad-hock and Bi-Weekly Housekeeping Walkabouts and ensure that findings are addressed timeously.
Technical competencies:
- OHS Act and Regulations and SAMSA Acts knowledge
- Vessel safety equipment knowledge
- Maritime safety management system knowledge
- Computer literacy
- SAP MP Module knowledge
Minimum Requirements:
Experience:
- 1 – 2 years’ experience as Safety Officer within the Fishing / Marine environment
Qualifications:
- Grade 12 / NQF 4
- National Diploma / Certificate in Safety Management or,
- Qualification in Maritime Safety Management
Additional Knowledge and Requirements:
- SAMTRAC Certificate
- Updating the Safety files for both Shorebase & Vessels and ensuring the accuracy thereof
- Ensuring legal appointments are in place
- Ensuring Vessel Safety registers are up to date
- Ensuring Legal Compliance Certificates and permits are in place (where applicable)
